The Mitochondria

Picture
The major role of the mitochondria is to create energy or ATP for the cell. It is consider as the power house because it create energy. It is enclosed my a membrane and has a nucleus of it's own. Their proteins are made out of free ribosomes in the cytosol and ribosomes themselves. Mitochondria are found in nearly all eukaryotic cells that include plants, protists, aniamls, and fungi. Some have one and some have severl mitochondria that correspond to the cell's level of metabolic activity. It is enclosed by two membrane with a phospholipid bilayer with unique proteins that are embedded within them. The outer layer is smooth and the inner layer is convoluted ith cristae. The inner layer are divided into two internal compartments. The first is the intermembrane space which is narrow between the inner and outer membrane. The second compartment is the mitochondrial matrix, that is ebclosed my the inner membrane. The matrix contain ribosomes and the mitocohndrial DNA or nucleus. It plays a role in cellular respiration.
